Blogging and Balance

May 6th, 2010

It’s been a full week.  My dad had knee replacement surgery yesterday, and I spent 13+ hours at the hospital with him (he’s doing great – going home tomorrow), I had my own little medical test Tuesday night (a sleep study – more to come in a future post…), and a lot going on with my career right now, too.  Which has left little time this week for a) exercise (ugh), and b) blogging.  It’s okay – I’ve been focused on the things I needed to be focused on this week, but I’ve definitely missed checking in regularly here on the blog, and checking your blogs, too.  I did make the rounds on Google Reader this afternoon, so I’m getting caught up on my blog reading, so I thought tonight I’d do a little blog writing, too.  My weekend without blogging turned into almost a week, though!

This all reminded me of a time, maybe a month into writing this blog, when I got totally out of balance with blogging, though.  I was spending almost all of my down time working on the blog.  First it was the layout, then it was migrating from Wordpress.com to a self-hosted site, then it was getting myself setup with AdSense and as an Amazon affiliate, then it was checking my stats, and checking my stats, and checking my stats.  I was a little obsessed.  I was enjoying it, and I wasn’t sacrificing time with family and friends, but I was sacrificing time to exercise, and I felt like I was running out of material to write about, because my free time was spent, well, blogging.

I realized I had gotten totally out of balance with blogging.  Reconstructingthirty.com had become my focus, to the detriment of » Read more: Blogging and Balance

A Busy Week

April 14th, 2010

Wow – it’s been a really busy week.  So many things coming together, coming to an end, and new beginnings all right at once!  I’m doing my best to stay on top of my nutrition and exercise in the midst of this craziness, but I’ve been fresh out of time to blog in detail, read your amazing blogs, and keep up with all of you on twitter!  I should have some time to catch up this weekend, but until then – how do you manage with nutrition and exercise when life gets busy beyond normal levels?

Staying Inspired by Bloggers

March 14th, 2010

One thing I haven’t done in awhile is to update my links to other health, wellness, and weight loss blogs.  I like to really make sure the blogs I’m recommending are blogs I actually read myself, so tonight, I’ve been enjoying expanding my own personal blogosphere and checking out some new blogs.  I came across some great blogs, and I’ve added them, along with some older blogger friends whom I hadn’t gotten around to adding and needed to be added to my links, too.  This network of bloggers in an amazing way to stay inspired on your weight loss journey!  And we all tend to be pretty friendly, open people – I mean, we put our weight struggles on the internet, so open is kind of an understatement – so drop by some of their blogs and say hello!

Below are the new blogs I’ve just added (they also appear under “Health and Wellness Blogs” to the right).  Many of these bloggers have already posted large losses, which might be particularly inspiring if you have a long road to go, like me!  And, of course, check out some of my old blogger friends, too!

Creative Process

March 11th, 2010

I just nearly shot a white chocolate orange bliss latte out of my nose, and I blame the Subourbon Wife.  (You can rib me about my girly choice of drink in the comments, but her post on an unexpected chat she had to have with her daughter this morning about modesty really cracked me up).  The Subourbon Wife is one of my new friends from a couple of Shocking Real Life writing workshops I’ve been taking from author Hollis Gillespie here in Atlanta over the past couple of months, and I’ve loved every minute of them.  I’ve always thought it would be great to be talented creatively.  I tried my hand at playing an instrument.  I sucked.  I tried my hand at painting.  I sucked.  I tried my hand at drawing.  I sucked (though I do have a rather nice sketch of the key to the Jeep I drove in college that I drew when I was going through a phase of wishing I had artistic talent and practicing sketching between classes).

I never considered my writing to be creative, because 1) it’s something I’ve always done, and as such is just something I’ve always thought of as a part of me, and 2) I’ve always been a non-fiction writer, so I wasn’t creating some fantastical alternate reality.  Thus, writing never struck me as creative, but just as something I had to do.  Idiot.  I know. » Read more: Creative Process
