Help Me Eradicate Driving While Dining – DWD

May 13th, 2010

Today I saw two people doing something that really chaps my hide.  Eating.  In their cars.  While driving!  I won’t say that I’ve never been guilty of this, but it irritates me now for a few different reasons.  First, I’ve always been really turned off by sloppy eaters.  You know, the ones who slurp their soup, crunch their chips too loudly, smack when eating something sticky, have stuff running down their chins, etc.  It drives me nuts, too put it mildly.  I’m hardly a prude, but I do think when you eat, unless you are one of the .0000003% of us who really was raised by wolves, you should kind of try to be as normal/least gross as possible.

Thus the problem with the car eaters.  They feel safe in their cars (just like all the nose-pickers on wheels out there), so they stop by a drive-through window, order some high fat, sloppy food, and then go at it like a hungry cheetah taking down it’s prey, thinking none of us can see the pure, animalistic passion with which they consume their cheesesteak, taco, french fries, or whatever else.  The clear windows that everyone else can see through providing a buffer between them and the outside world.  Like the guy I got behind today on my way home from work.  I couldn’t tell what he was eating, but it was messy, and he had a beard.  Ick.  Just…  Ick.   He’d tilt his big head back and drape whatever this was into his mouth, invariably catching the remnants in his beard.  And since traffic was stopped, » Read more: Help Me Eradicate Driving While Dining – DWD

Weekly Weigh In, and Blaming Breakfast on the Dog

April 3rd, 2010

The Culprit

Yep – that’s her on the left.  The culprit for my not so healthy breakfast.  Back to that in a few, but first, this is a pretty important weekend.  It’s Easter weekend (and I’m not one of the bloggers giving up chocolate bunnies; more power to you guys, but if I don’t eat at least an ear, that little bastard will taunt me well into next week and I’ll end up taking down him and three of his friends on sale at the drugstore).  It’s also the weekend that marks five months of my reconstruction that started on my thirtieth birthday, and it marks almost three months of this blog!  If you’re new to the blog, you might want to start here, here, here, here, and here.

First things first, Saturdays are my weekly weigh in days, and this morning I weighed in at 254.2 (damn new scales.  I so liked being below 250!).  All in all, that’s a 53.8 pound loss since I began this journey, and 1.8 pounds down from last week!  As I type this, I realize that one huge piece of this reconstruction is taking away the power these numbers have had over me for most of my life.  The first time I divulged my weight on this blog, I really wasn’t feeling it.  I thought about deleting that post many times, but I thought it was important to take away the power I was giving those numbers, so I did share them.  Now I’ll share my weight and my journey with any poor person who asks.  That in and of itself has helped tremendously.

Last night, I watched Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (a show and concept I absolutely love), and there was a teenager named Brittany who shared about her struggle with obesity so openly and courageously.  I was in awe.  She’s 16 or 17 years old, and she’s dealing with this challenge incredibly.  It’s taken me thirty years to get comfortable talking about my weight!  I always kind of hoped » Read more: Weekly Weigh In, and Blaming Breakfast on the Dog

Variety: Spice of Life, and Key to Healthy Living

March 4th, 2010

The past couple of weeks, sticking to my plans for healthy living has felt kind of like having your underwear on backwards – slightly uncomfortable, a little restrictive, and just not quite right.  I’ve been doing fairly well (not counting my entire week without exercise), but something just has been a little off.  Even though I haven’t really been unhealthy in my eating, I was just was starting to feel a little behind – a little like I wasn’t at the top of my game.

And then I realized early this week, I’ve been bored.  Bored…as…hell…  Bored with the treadmill, bored with my packed lunches, bored with my typical breakfast of cereal, bored with the whole…damn…thing…  When I got started with healthy eating, I really needed to be very simplistic so that I didn’t have to put too much thought into my meals.  I knew if I counted calories or food groups, I’d feel overwhelmed, so I just found options that worked for breakfast and lunch, and I ate them.  Everyday.

Breakfast was a bowl of cereal with half of a banana and skim milk.  Lunch was » Read more: Variety: Spice of Life, and Key to Healthy Living
