February 17th, 2010You read that right. Mr. “I only exercise in the privacy of my own home” lost his mind bit the bullet and joined a gym. In other news, a small army of gnomes went snowshoeing through hell.
I really have avoided public exercise for as long as I can remember, not even really enjoying going out for a neighborhood walk, as I’d inevitably pass some fitness nut decked out in running gear and jogging in place at crosswalks while I lumbered along in my old college bowl game t-shirt and dual purpose swim trunks/walking shorts. Avoiding neighborhood walks is just the tip of the iceberg, as I avoided gyms at all costs.
Why did I avoid gyms? Because the image I had built up through the years of a visit to the gym in my out of shape, inactive mind went something like this: You walk in and swipe your membership card with some perky, beauty queen type receptionist who is in perfect physical condition, get your towel, and proceed to the locker room.
