Weekly Weigh-In: Everything’s Bigger in Texas?

May 15th, 2010

Well – I’ve taken Reconstructing 30 on the road this weekend.  I’m in my adopted hometown of Houston!  I lived here for a little over three years, and I really did love it.  Houston isn’t for everyone, and it’s very much a car-based city, but it really has some amazing assets, including the Texas Medical Center (the world’s largest!), some really beautiful neighborhoods with fantastic parks and museums, and wonderfully friendly people.  If you’ve never visited Houston, here’s a taste of it – convention and visitors’ bureau style:

So I’m here to take care of a bit of business (if you know of anyone who wants to buy a beautiful 2BR/2BA condo near the Texas Medical Center and Rice University, send them my way!), but the nice side benefit is getting to see my wonderful friends here in Houston.  Which includes visiting some of Houston’s amazing restaurants…  Am I making perfect choices that would lead to consistent weight loss if I ate these things on a daily basis?  No.  Am I making mainly healthy choices, controlling portions, and eating better than I would have if I were here six months ago?  Absolutely.

And that starts to sum up the lessons of the past week for me, which are really the lessons that are the culmination of an experience that’s been going on for three or four weeks now.  » Read more: Weekly Weigh-In: Everything’s Bigger in Texas?

Variety: Spice of Life, and Key to Healthy Living

The past couple of weeks, sticking to my plans for healthy living has felt kind of like having your underwear on backwards – slightly uncomfortable, a little restrictive, and just not quite right.  I’ve been doing fairly well (not counting my entire week without exercise), but something just has been a little off.  Even though I haven’t really been unhealthy in my eating, I was just was starting to feel a little behind – a little like I wasn’t at the top of my game.

And then I realized early this week, I’ve been bored.  Bored…as…hell…  Bored with the treadmill, bored with my packed lunches, bored with my typical breakfast of cereal, bored with the whole…damn…thing…  When I got started with healthy eating, I really needed to be very simplistic so that I didn’t have to put too much thought into my meals.  I knew if I counted calories or food groups, I’d feel overwhelmed, so I just found options that worked for breakfast and lunch, and I ate them.  Everyday.

Breakfast was a bowl of cereal with half of a banana and skim milk.  Lunch was » Read more: Variety: Spice of Life, and Key to Healthy Living

Eating Out Without Pigging Out

January 19th, 2010

Part of my deal with myself when I began this weight loss journey almost three months ago was that I would be aware of what my downfalls had been when I’d tried to lose weight in the past.  I think if you’re going to make true lifestyle changes and not just go on a diet, you really do have to be self-aware and know what changes are going to be sustainable for you.  One area where I’d gotten myself in terrible messes in the past was not learning how to eat out properly.  I’m single, I often work long hours (not being a slave to the man is yet another component of Reconstructing 30 – but I haven’t quite figured that one out – maybe by 35), and though I love to cook, I’d rather eat cardboard than clean the kitchen at the end of a long day.  Eating out is also a big part of my social life – and that’s really where things got tricky when I had previously tried to diet. » Read more: Eating Out Without Pigging Out
